Description of class - Create amazing dolls using sticks, fabric scraps and found objects. Sticks are wound with fabric strips, faces attached and then embellished. A low-temp hot glue gun is used to hold things together. You will be amazed at the creative results!

Option 1 - a group of adults - no prior experience required, just a willingness to play and have fun.

Option 2 - A parent, other relative or friend working with one or two children

This class can be done in one 2 1/2 hour session

Location - can be done in a home if there is room enough to work comfortably, in a community hall or church hall

Number of participants and suitable age ranges

4 to 12 persons

adults - any interested

children - 8 and above. No upper age limit. No more than 2 children per adult

Cost - $10 per person or $12 for adult and one child, $14 for adult and 2 children. If a hall must be rented, that cost will be added.

Description of project/s:

1. Basic beginning machine sewing for those with no experience: becoming familiar with the machine and sewing terms. Straight sewing and square corners. Participants will make a gingham potholder. Amount of time: two 2-hour sessions. Materials needed: sewing machine, thread, scissors, ruler or tape measure, pins. Suitable for ages 9-90.
Cost: $125.00


2. Sewing for those familiar with a sewing machine. Participants will make a reversible tote bag. Amount of time: one 2-2.5 hour session. Materials needed: sewing machine, 1 yard medium weight fabric, matching thread, scissors, ruler or tape measure, pins. Suitable for ages 9-90.
Cost: $75.00

Number of participants: 4 –12, limited to space. No more than 2 children per adult.

Location: Community hall, library, church hall, etc. Tables are necessary—no more than 4 persons per 6 foot table. Electrical outlets must be available.

Description of project: Each participant will make one holiday centerpiece using a candlestick holder base (provided by the participant), floral oasis, and a combination of live, dried, and natural decorations. By switching out some decorations, the centerpiece can last from Thanksgiving through Valentine’s Day.

Amount of time, number of sessions: This workshop can be accomplished in one of two ways.
1. Peg brings all needed supplies (except for candlestick holders) and some basic materials. She leads the group on an outdoor walk of the neighborhood/area, where they will collect materials to be used in the centerpiece. This option is preferred, and requires a total of 3 hours for gathering materials and making the centerpiece. Participants should bring a pair of clippers or garden shears if possible.
2. Peg brings all needed supplies and materials (except for candlesticks). This option requires a total of 90 minutes to make the centerpiece.

Blackout periods – months or times during which you cannot do this. No workshops in September or October. This workshop is most appropriate for mid-November to mid-December.

Number of participants and suitable age ranges: This class is appropriate for adults, and for children aged 7 and up. Family groups are welcome, and can choose to make one centerpiece per person or per family. Minimum/maximum group size: 6-15 people.

Location of program/project: This project requires table space in an area that can get a bit messy, and access to water. Depending on the size of the group, it can be done in a basement, heated garage, large kitchen, church hall, etc.
Cost: Cost for option 1: $25/person. Cost for option 2: $40/person. Includes travel, preparation, supplies and materials (see options).

Patchwork Greeting Cards

Description of project: Each participant will make at least three greeting cards, using patchwork quilt techniques, old cards, and card stock. Additional cards may be made if time and supplies allows

Amount of time, number of sessions: This workshop can be accomplished in 90-120 minutes. Participants will use old greeting cards, rulers, and glue (all provided) and scissors (participants to bring). They will cut the old cards into symmetrical shapes, “patching” them together in traditional quilting patterns: stars, log cabin, flowers, etc. Asymmetrical shapes can also be used to create “crazy quilt” designs.

Blackout periods – No workshops in September or October.

Number of participants and suitable age ranges: This class is appropriate for adults, and for children aged 7 and up. Family groups are welcome. Minimum/maximum group size: 6-20 people.

Location of program/project: This project requires table space for each participant. Depending on the size of the group, it can be done in a kitchen, basement, heated garage, church hall, etc.

Description of project: Prefer to work with multi-generational family groups where parent (or aunt, grandparent, uncle) works with one or two children to create a clay project. Will use a slab (a sheet) of clay and fold it into one of the projects named above.


Amount of time, number of sessions: one 2 ½ hour session. During the session, participants will add color to the clay with a material called underglaze. The item will be fired and glazed and returned to the participants at a later date. The firing process may take 1-3 weeks depending on studio activity of the time. Person making arrangements should pick up finished work and distribute to participants.

Suitable ages: No children under the age of 8. No upper age limit. No more than 2 children per adult. Does require some hand and arm dexterity and use of rolling pins.

Blackout periods: Not September or October until after the Allegany Artisans Studio Tour.

Number of participants and suitable age ranges: up to 10 adults with up to 25 total people.

Location of workshop: in a church hall or library hall or community center. Need tables for all participants to work on. A 6 foot table accommodates 3 partnerships. Participants should bring rolling pins and may wish to bring other materials depending on the project. Examples: textured fabric such as lace (9 x 12 inches in size roughly), cookie cutters for wind chimes.

Cost: $25 for one adult/one child; $30 for one adult/2 children. 10-18 people in a group. Includes travel time and mileage, all preparation for the workshop, presentation and work time, firing and glazing and gift bags for finished pieces.

Special note: since we would be working with clay it would not be suitable to have snacks available during the workshop. If you would like to serve refreshments it would be best to wait until everyone is finished and the space is cleaned.
